Reflection 1.2

I would like to teach so that I can help students better explore our world. So many students are swept away through school and on into the working world without taking advantage of their own identities and knowledge. I have seen my people ‘waste’ a free education in our public schools without reaching their own great potentials. If this is because of social or economic boundaries, then as a teach I would aspire to break students understanding of these and help invite them into a world where their potentials are endless.
I guess, lastly, that I want to teach so that I can share my own interests with others. In Biology, there are so many wonders that can be viewed from a car window or as you walk to class. Knowledge of our environment helps an individual better appreciate this beauty, and I can live a full happy life dedicated to educating students on our life sciences.

  1. I so agree with you that teaching is a way to share joy and wonders with kids. I don't think kids necessarily appreciate the beauty of our world and environment unless someone directs them toward it--and so many great science teachers have shared their enthusiasm with kids in that way.

Your thoughts about potential are also thought-provoking. What a waste it is when children--humans--never achieve what they might have. And teaching is certainly about inspiring kids to reach for all they can be.

  2. I really like your idea of helping students explore the world. I think you are right that so much emphasis has been placed on the later goal - get a job and earn money - that we forget the experience of learning. As a teacher, you will definitely have the opportunity to share your interests. I remember some of my favorite classes (even if I didn't necessarily like the subject) were with teachers who loved their subjects.

How do you feel you were able to reach your potential, or see that it was endless? Will you try and incorporate the same techniques for your students?
